LIDL TO EXPAND ITS WAREHOUSE OPERATIONS IN WALES
10.02.2020 | London, UK
Lidl GB has today confirmed the purchase of land adjacent to its warehouse in Bridgend.
The land will enable the supermarket to extend its distribution centre to over 36,000 sqm, which will significantly increase its capacity.
Simon Hedderman, Regional Director at Lidl GB, said: "We first opened our warehouse here in Bridgend in 2004, servicing Lidl stores across Wales. In this time we have experienced considerable growth, with more customers shopping in our stores than ever before. In addition to providing new state-of-the-art facilities for our colleagues, the extension will enable us to expand and strengthen our operations across Wales, whilst creating even more job opportunities to support the local community.”
The distribution centre currently employs 233 people across a variety of different roles and departments, including Logistics, Supply Chain, Property and Administration, with expansion plans providing capacity to increase the workforce further in the future. The teams provide vital support to a growing network of 58 stores in Wales.
Ingo Fischer, Chief Development Officer for Lidl GB, added: "As part of our expansion plans and to support our store growth, we have been working hard to strengthen our infrastructure, through the opening of new warehouses and the development of existing operations. The expansion of our Bridgend distribution centre will ensure that we are able to provide continued support to our current store network in Wales, whilst paving the way for future growth.”
Bridgend is one of 13 Lidl distribution centres operating across England, Scotland and Wales. The discounter recently opened its brand new distribution centre in Eurocentral, Scotland, replacing its existing warehouse in Livingston. This comes after the opening of a new warehouse in Doncaster and is part of a long expansion pipeline including four new warehouses in Bolton, Peterborough, Luton and Leeds, along with a new London HQ in Tolworth.
