Saturday 25th July marks Britain’s 2026 Planetary Health Diet Overshoot Day – the point in the year when, based on current eating habits, we’ve already exceeded the recommended annual balance of foods for a healthy and sustainable diet.
While every food group is important for overall nutrition, this threshold has been calculated by Lidl GB, in partnership with WPI Economics, to show exactly where we are falling short, overeating and getting it right.
The Planetary Health Diet (PHD) is a simple guide, developed by scientific experts, on how to feed a growing population healthily, without overburdening the planet.
As the first British discounter to align with the PHD, we’re on a mission to make this as easy and affordable as possible.
We’re taking concrete steps to support our shoppers, including:
- Increasing the proportion of plant-based foods sold by 20% by 2030
- Increasing the proportion of plant-based protein to 25% of the total protein we sell by 2030
- Ensuring 20% of all protein sales come from plant-based sources, increasing the share of wholegrain products sold to 25%
- Categorising 10% of our own-brand range as Live Well by 2030
Our Live Well marker, developed in collaboration with the British Nutrition Foundation, will also help our customers to easily identify those products that support a healthy, balanced diet, meeting strict nutrition and sustainability criteria.
