8th February 2019: Lidl UK has today welcomed local politicians and councillors to the construction site of its new headquarters in Tolworth, South West London, as the next phase of development gets underway.

Guests including Sir Ed Davey, MP for Kingston and Surbiton and Thay Thayalan, Mayor of Kingston upon Thames, were given a tour of the site by members of Lidl’s senior management team and were shown architects’ plans for the new building, which included information about the facilities it will house.

The new, £70m UK head office location is five miles away from Lidl’s current HQ in Wimbledon and is set to be completed over a two-year period. With 250,000 sq. ft. of office space, the building will accommodate the retailer’s 800 head office employees, as well as providing support for its growing UK store network and 13 warehouses across the country.

Christian Härtnagel, CEO of Lidl UK, commented: “We’re very excited to have started the construction of our new head office and it was great to welcome guests to the site today. The investment in our new headquarters underlines our long-term commitment to the UK and will help facilitate our growth for years to come. We’re really looking forward to joining the Tolworth community and becoming a neighbour to the existing businesses here.”

Sir Ed Davey MP, Kingston and Surbiton, commented: “The fact that Lidl chose Tolworth as its home for a new UK head office, bringing with it new jobs and business, is fantastic news for the local area. It was great to visit the construction site today, meeting the team who are delivering this project and I look forward to welcoming Lidl to our community.”

Dave Ward, Winvic’s Managing Director, added: “Today has been a unique opportunity for Winvic to demonstrate our commitment to surrounding communities, safety and the environment to the politicians that serve and care for the people of Tolworth. When the building’s steel frame is erected in March we expect interest in the scheme to increase and, together with Lidl, we will continue to liaise with local people and businesses.”

Lidl opened its first UK stores in 1994 and has grown to employ more than 22,000 people nationwide. The new head office development reflects the retailer’s continued investment ambitions in operations, infrastructure and employees, to support the growth of the business not just in London, but across the UK.
