LIDL NAMED CHEAPEST SUPERMARKET BY WHICH? AS IT WINS PLANNING PERMISSION FOR ANOTHER NEW WAREHOUSE IN GB
03.11.2023 | London, UK
Lidl GB has claimed the title of cheapest supermarket after coming top in a basket comparison conducted by Which?. The monthly analysis involves comparing the average prices of a shop consisting of popular groceries at eight of the UK’s biggest supermarkets. A basket of shopping at Lidl was over £10 cheaper than at Tesco and Sainsbury’s, and nearly £17 cheaper than Waitrose.
Ryan McDonnell, Lidl GB CEO, reacts to the Which? findings: “As we head into the festive season, we remain relentlessly focused on offering the lowest prices in the market. The latest Which? basket demonstrates that we’re delivering on our price promise and that customers can be confident they are getting the best value possible when they walk through our doors.
“We are seeing growing numbers of new customers coming to us and are now the third biggest supermarket in London, as well as the fastest growing supermarket in the whole of the UK*. On top of this, we are also delighted to have secured planning permission for a new warehouse in Leeds this week, meaning we’ll be able to give even more households access to our high-quality affordable products in the long term.”
The new Regional Distribution Centre (RDC), which Lidl has secured planning permission for in Gildersome, Leeds, will further strengthen the discounter's infrastructure across the country. The warehouse will also create hundreds of new jobs for the community. This follows the opening of Lidl’s Luton RDC in September, the discounter’s largest warehouse in the world, which is set you create 1,500 jobs.
In addition to Which? Lidl was also named cheapest supermarket in The Grocer’s latest price comparison, whilst coming out cheapest for ten months on the trot in the Manchester Evening News’ weekly basket comparison.
