Wednesday 15 January, LondonAn announcement for a reign-y day… Lidl has penned an open letter to HRH King Charles III in a bid to be knighted as his new supermarket of choice - and eventually be bestowed with a Royal Warrant.

It comes as new research shows the Royal Household could be saving over £100 a week by switching to the discounter – more than £5,400 over a year’s worth of grocery shopping.

The letter has been released after King Charles’ awarded a number of Royal Warrant’s in December, prompting Lidl to make its case and dethrone the current holder, Waitrose.

Posted to the Palace and on the brand’s social media channels this morning, Lidl’s letter reads:

“As we welcome the New Year, we know you’ll soon be awarding Royal Warrants to your favourite suppliers of the Palace, and we think it’s about time for a reset.

Those weekly Waitrose bills will be pretty hefty and we feel it’s our duty to let you know you could be making a huge saving with a simple switch to Lidl, just ask our many fans.

Whether you’re looking for succulent British grass-fed beef, organic British free-range eggs, or even baked beans for Queen Camilla - we’ve got what you need for all your favourite dishes. Why not try a delicious Crusty Sourdough Rye from our legendary bakery, or sample a wee dram of our award-winning Ben Bracken Highland Single Malt?

To make it easy (because we know your plate must be pretty full), we’ve done the research for you and, as it turns out, you could be saving save over £100 on your typical weekly shop – that’s a savvy saving!!”

The astronomical weekly shop saving was calculated by comparing the cost of ingredients needed to make King Charles’ reported favourite meals when shopping at both retailers.

The bespoke weekly menu includes breakfast options such as muesli with dried fruit, evening suppers of roast lamb, and salmon fillets – as well as his favourite tipple, a Highland single malt from the supermarket’s award-winning Ben Bracken range. And naturally, it’s also considered the monarchs’ dietary quirks of skipping lunch and having an organic boiled egg with every meal.

The letter also highlights that two thirds of Lidl’s permanent range is from British suppliers, and that 100% of the discounters fresh everyday milk, butter, eggs, cream, pork, chicken and beef is British. In fact, as part of Lidl’s £21 billion investment plan they are committed to backing British farmers*.

Lidl’s sustainability credentials are in line with his eco-conscious values. Lidl takes working towards a better tomorrow very seriously, supporting the planet and people through sustainable initiatives like reducing plastic packaging, minimising food wase and cutting carbon emissions**.

What’s more, His Majesty needn’t compromise on quality produce. With award wins from the Good Housekeeping Institute and the Retail Industry Awards, Lidl’s ingredients have proven to be fit for a King.
