  • Lidl GB has teamed up with celebrity chef Miguel Barclay to create seven affordable £1 Planet Plate recipes, each designed to show how simple alternatives can help people enjoy a balanced meal for less
  • This follows research which reveals nearly seven in ten Brits believe eating healthily is more expensive, with cost preventing many from making more sustainable food choices
  • Lidl GB customers will benefit from the launch of Wellness Wednesdays this summer, a new weekly initiative through Lidl Plus offering 10% off products from the supermarket’s Live Well range every Wednesday

With household budgets still under pressure, new research commissioned by Lidl GB reveals that almost seven in 10 Brits (69%) believe eating healthily comes at a higher cost, with nearly half (48%) admitting they have opted for a less healthy choice in the past year because it was cheaper.

However, the research also shows that consumers want to make better choices, with many worrying about the impact their diet could have on their long-term health (65%) and environment (48%). Despite this, affordability remains one of the biggest barriers preventing people from improving their diets, with nearly half (45%) saying cost makes it harder to make healthier and more sustainable food choices.

To show that balanced meals can be affordable and achievable, Lidl GB has teamed up with renowned budget chef Miguel Barclay, creator of the bestselling One Pound Meals series, to launch seven new £1 Planet Plate recipes.

Using simple, affordable ingredients available in Lidl GB stores, Miguel’s recipes show how shoppers can create balanced, healthier meals. The recipes have been inspired by the Planetary Health Diet, a simple guide, developed by scientists to help a growing population eat well in a way that supports the health of both people and the planet.

Nearly two thirds (62%) of consumers admit they would be open to making small changes to their weekly shop if they could reduce their environmental impact without increasing their grocery bill. To bridge this gap, these recipes offer easy ways to integrate more foods encouraged by the Planetary Health Diet,  including vegetables, beans, pulses, lentils, and plant-based options, into everyday meals.

The Planetary Health Diet is not about completely changing the way people eat, but making small, easy swaps that can be incorporated into everyday meals, such as:

  • Increase your plant-based protein, by adding more beans, pulses, and lentils to your staple meals.
  • Choose one wholegrain every day, whether that’s wholegrain bread, pasta, rice or other everyday staples.
  • Add a few more portions of fruit or vegetables, whether that’s in meals, snacks or on the go.
  • Keep the meals you love, but add more balance by including extra vegetables, wholegrains or plant-based protein.

Richard Bourns, Chief Commercial Officer at Lidl GB said: “Our research shows people want to make healthier and more sustainable choices for the planet, but often affordability stands in the way. At Lidl GB, we’re breaking down those barriers by proving that market leading value can go hand-in-hand with making foods encouraged by the Planetary Health Diet more affordable and accessible. We’re supporting this ambition through year-round promotions, rewards and initiatives designed to make balanced choices more affordable.”

Miguel Barclay, chef and creator of the One Pound Meals series, said: "I’ve always believed that great food doesn’t have to come with a big price tag. The key is making the most of simple, affordable ingredients and knowing how to bring them together in a way that’s delicious and balanced. These £1 Planet Plate recipes show how little changes, such as adding more vegetables and beans, can be easy to create at home, without compromising on flavour or affordability."

Lidl GB is helping shoppers make these changes by continually investing in cutting prices, offering year-round promotions, discounts, and Lidl Plus rewards, as well as  savings on fresh fruit and veg through its Pick of the Week. Meanwhile, the discounter’s Live Well range includes a marker to help shoppers identify products that can support their health and the health of the planet.  Customers can additionally benefit from the launch of Wellness Wednesdays, a new weekly initiative through Lidl Plus offering 10% off a product from the Live Well range every Wednesday (between 30th July and 2nd September 2026), helping households make more balanced choices for less.
