8th June, London – Everything’s coming up rosé - Lidl has declared the nation is officially entering rosé season!

In 2022, a public rush to the shops to stock up was marked by temperatures reaching 28°C, which saw the retailer sell a bottle of rosé every second on the hottest day the nation had seen so far that year2.

Sales data from the first heatwave of 2022 (15th-17th June)3, saw Lidl rosé sales more than double4 - and with temperatures rising this week, the supermarket is predicting the pink tipple will fly off shelves once again.

Rosé revellers are also being provided guidance on the need to keep their favourite blush out of the sun during alfresco get-togethers. As well as warming up the wine, a phenomenon called ‘light strike’ can cause UV rays to dull the bright fruit flavours in wine.

Lidl’s Master of Wine, Richard Bampfield explains: “Not only will direct sunlight warm up the wine, but if the wine is bottled in clear glass, it will also impact the aroma and after-taste. It’s surprising how quickly light strike can hit – sometimes within an hour, and the impact may be magnified for sparkling Rosé as fizz goes flat quickly as the wine warms up.

“To make sure your favourite wine stays fresh, it’s always best to find a shady spot for both your wine bottle and glass. Alternatively, you can wrap the bottle in newspaper or aluminium foil: not the most glamorous look perhaps, but this will protect it from light strike and help keep the bottle cool…”

Shady spot secured, wine lovers can head to Lidl stores nationwide for a collection of rosé to make them blush with excitement. The collection includes:

  • Ca' Del Lago Rosato IGT Trevenezie, £5.99 – a new addition to the range, this stunning bottle makes the perfect addition to any summer picnic or dinner party table. It’s a great choice for sunshine sipping as it is lightly fruity, fresh and appetising, with a crisp dry finish
  • Côtes de Provence Rosé, 2021, £7.69 – offering a light, dry burst of the best grapes the French riviera has to offer, making it a great wallet-friendly alternative that rosé loved by celebs
  • Deluxe South African Pinotage Rose Swartland, 2022, £5.49 – Part of Lidl’s new Deluxe wine range, this Pinotage has fresh, elegant notes of berry and cherry
  • Deluxe Argentinian Malbec Rosé Uco Valley, 2021, £5.99 - Crisp and dry, this wine holds notes of both forest fruits and plum, and is the perfect match for cold meats or salmon quiche
